“close to the knives” is a reference book of gay literature and north-american counterculture, a great book on aids, but is above all a dazzling literary text, an outcry of a virtuoso romantic writer, a flayed man beaten out by life who writes about his existence and time, we are in the 80s bohemian New-York and its underworld fauna (squatters, prostitutes, junkies, transvestites…)…combining different textual materials, Wojnarowicz speaks about his hate of being alienated, his constant quest for freedom, his furtive and anonymous sexual encounters. Death slowly creeps into the text, the author facing the loss of his friends and his own announced destruction.
